Summer Solstice guide: Make the most of the longest day of the year.
— Set your alarm and greet the sun Saturday during the Solstice Celebration at Highpoint Scenic Vista in Lower Windsor Township. The event starts at 5:30 a.m. Summer Solstice takes place at 6:51 a.m. [Register at 717-428-1961]
— Catch the opening ceremony of the 14th Annual Penn-Mar Irish Festival Saturday at The Markets at Shrewsbury, 12025 Susquehanna Trail, Shrewsbury Township. Hear up-and-coming traditional Irish musicians and stars. [$10 in advance; $13 at the gate]
— Stock up on summer reading during the Book Nook Bonanza event at the York City Ice Arena, 941 Vander Ave., York. It runs 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. [Most hardbacks are $2 and paperbacks are $1, with special sales occurring throughout the weekend]
— Get to Wingstock to see wing winners crowned. Take in food, live entertainment and kids activities at Santander Stadium, 5 Brooks Robinson Way, York. Gates open at noon Saturday. The wing-eating competition starts at 5 p.m. [$6 in advance; $8 at the gate; Kids younger than 3 get in for free]
— Finish the long say Saturday at the Summer Solstice Celebration at Roundtop Mountain Resort, 925 Roundtop Road, Warrington Township. Enjoy food from the grill and fireworks at dusk. [Free; Mountain Adventure packages are available for $20]
Festivals and fairs:
— Enjoy an annual tradition during the Jubilee Day Street Fair through 9 tonight along Main and Market streets in Mechanicsburg. It will feature live music, food, arts, craft vendors and children’s activities. [Free parking and shuttle service available]
— The gardens will be open for the Pennsylvania Lavender Festival 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Willow Pond Farm, 145 Tract Road, Fairfield. Pick your own lavender and enjoy lavender cookies, lemonade and ice cream. [Free]
— The 11th annual Harrisburg Brewers Fest might sell out. Get tickets while you can for two sessions that will bring music and dozens of brews to the state capitol streets Saturday. [Tickets are $50 in advance; benefits Cystic Fibrosis Foundation]
On stage:
— York Little Theatre, 27 S. Belmont St., Spring Garden Township, presents “Gypsy” 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. It also plays next weekend. [$25, with discounts for seniors, students and kids]
— Dress up in anything that reminds you of the 1930’s for the 42nd Street Costume Party. Enjoy a buffet and performance of “42nd Street” at 8 p.m. Friday at the Allenberry Playhouse, 1559 Boiling Springs Road, Boiling Springs. Prizes will be awarded to those who dress in costume. — Learn some new moves during the Swinging with the Unforgettable Big Band event 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Elks Lodge, 223 N. George St., York. A Charleston lesson will kick off the night. Open dancing begins at 9 p.m. [$10; free for Elks members]
— There are four shows on tap at American Music Theatre, 2425 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster. Classic groups, including Charlie Thomas & The Drifters hit the stage 8 p.m. Saturday. REO Speedwagon will perform 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
